Leaving Singapore

So, here we are, my last day in Singapore. What an amazing experience. I've grown very fond of SRT and hope to come back someday. I can't tell you the kind of pride I have an an Artistic Director to have experienced this. AMAZING. The cast was great - yesterday we had 2 shows with raucous houses. The kids are adorable. Josh Sticklin, somehow, got an audition for an industrial. I hope he gets the job. Then, the amazing cast treated me to the Singapore Company of THE LION KING. Everytime I see that show, I want to rethink everything I've learned about theatre. Simply amazing.

On my agenda today: buy souvenirs for Sang and Craig, turn in my keys to the apartment, write post cards, print airline tickets, steal extra programs, posters and brochures for our archives and future grant proposals, give cast extra food, toiletries, and farecards, and THANK a million people. I'm a little sad to leave, but happy to return to the theatre (We are amidst a very exciting time. I can;t WAIT to tell you all about it.) and get to my family. BTW - Sang has become extremely good at Skype!

We have 2 shows today and an appearence at kids thingy! Then, lunch with SRT and shopping. I tried to stay up last night so that I can sleep on the plane. Hmmm...maybe I'll need a touch of medication to help.

The adorable kids had an amazing time. I'm so proud of Adventure theatre and the company. SRT has been so great. The interactive moments in the show were thrilling. There were a group of college kids studying children's theatre and they seemed to be having fun. Of course, the show wasn't flawless. We learned a lot and rehearsed for another 4 hours to fine tune. We are about 15 minutes from show #2 and I'm excited to see it again. I'm a little sad that I will be leaving tomorrow, but what an experience. Hopefully, we'll come back. Sending you all a bunch of pics that I've taken of this lovely city. Check out the cute faces in the audience.

So, 6 days in Singapore has been so much fun. The staff at SRT is amazing. We are in the last stretches of tech and I'm thrilled.

The cast and I have been having a great time getting acquainted with this beautiful country. Chinatown, Little India, the botanical gardens and the food have been highlights. Tomorrow we are doing a night safari and a ride that sling shots you 100 feet into the air.

There are time when we don't even realize we are halfway around the world!!!

We also saw a local company's darling production of Into The Woods in a 900 seat theatre- amazing.

We learned a lot about what audiences respond to and made some adjustments to the show. Tomorrow morning is our first audience and I'm curious curious curious....

Friday, July 29 - What fun!!

So, today, Ryan Maxwell (The ultimate Stage Manager) and I had breakfast with Sarah (SRT Production Associate). We had a traditional chinese breakfast (soft boiled eggs with cocnut butter toast and coffee). It was so good. Then we headed to a production meeting to iron out final details. We met the rest of the SRT crew at their lovely theatre. This is the only produciton company in Singapore that has their own theatre. We met with David (Techincal Director), Charlotte (Executive Director), Douglas (Produciton Manager) and Sarah. Good meeting. All the props and costumes are in tact from the travels. Except a crayon or two.

After that Ryan and I headed back to the apartments and met the rest of the cast. Josh Sticklin, Ayanna Hardy and Alex Vernon. Incidentally, this is Alex and Ayanna's first time traveling abroad. YAY. Josh's college buddy, Baron, who teaches English at a University in China joined us.

We all had lunch and headed to the marina for a day of sight seeing. Check out a few pictures and video. Singapore should be a destination for you to consider when thinking of traveling. It's so progressive. The architecture will blow your mind. Also, it's such a diverse place. People live here from everywhere.

We had a drink at Skye park - which is at the top of a building. AMAZING views of Singapore. Apparently, it's the second most densly populated city in the world. Skyepark has an infinity pool, that edges up to the side of the sky scaper. It looks like you could fall off the side.

Later that evening ART treated us to dinner. It was lovely. Gaurav, the artistic Director joined us and

After dinner, we checked out the night life. Crazy, amazing. So mcuh fun.

Well, off to another day of sightseeing.

So, we landed at about mid-night Singapore time and we still like each other. The plane ride was very long. We had to stay awake as much as possible, to minimize jet lag.

Arrived in warm Singapore Ansley Douglas, Sarah and Renee. Very nice staff from SRT. From what we can see , it's a beautiful city. We learned a little about how it was founded-interesting. Our apartments are AMAZING! Modern, comfortable, and Eco friendly. There is a pool and gym and lots of indoor/outdoor seating. Beautiful rock garden. More about that later.

On the Eve of our Trip to SINGAPORE

Can I tell you how difficult it has been to sleep for the past few years? What an exciting time. When I first started at Adventure Theatre in 2007, I made a list of the things I wanted to accomplish in 5 years. I really wanted to do something international. I had no idea what or how.

Well, here we are almost 4 years later heading to Singapore with our production of JUST A DREAM: The Green Play.

The play is based on the book by Chris Van Allsburg about a litterbug who becomes an environmental steward through a series of dreams. The show toured to local schools and libraries last Spring with the support of GEICO and in partnership with Bethesda Green. Each school received a free tree or plant donated by Good earth and Casey Trees. The production elements were all recycled or earth friendly products.

Tomorrow, we fly for 14 hours to Japan and then 7 ½ hours to Singapore, arriving just before mid-night their time. I’ll introduce you to the cast during our travels and tell you more about the production.

I was getting ready to email you to tell you how much [my son] loved the show Friday night. We got there really early and he had a front row seat, complete with his antlers on his head!!!!

We LOVED it. Of course we got to meet Rudolph after the show and on the way home [he] said, “Spot was dressed up as Rudolph.” That was not the same guy that played Spot was it? I thought that was pretty intelligent of my son to notice. Of course he also said he wants to go back and see it again J

School’s Out! Workshop – Friday, October 15th

REMINDER: MCPS is closed on Friday, October 15^th; Schools are also closed November 1^st and 2^nd.

You take the day off from work last minute, the boss is irritated and it’s a lackluster day for all involved.

Drop off begins at 8:30 am and you can pick up your child as late as 5:30 pm. They will get a whole day of fun theatre-related activities and workshops, an opportunity to see an 11 am performance of our main stage show. For only $65 your boss will be happy, the kids will be thrilled and you will feel like a Rock-Star.

Date Night! – Saturday, October 16th

Attention all Mothers who succumb to mommy guilt and never take a night for themselves:

Let it all go and hit the town alone. Sans kids. Guilt-free. 6:00- 11:00 pm is ALL YOURS.

$25 for the first sibling and only $10 each younger sibling you register. We feed them (Domino’s Pizza), entertain them with fun theatre games and a movie, you get to do whatever you want guilt-free for a lot less than you would if you hired a sitter.

Plan Ahead, we hold Date Night! every third Saturday of every month. Take adulthood back- at least once a month, anyhow.

We had an amazing first rehearsal hosted by Lee Pushkin and several new Adventure Theatre friends joined us for cocktails, laughs, a few songs and the brilliance of the design work of an amazing team of artists, led by Roberta Gasbarre. This is a show you don't want to miss!!!
The show opens on April 30 and runs through June 13th. This is one of my favorite movies of all TIME!!! I'm so glad to get the chance to share it with so many kids.

One of our fantastic board members - LEE PUSHKIN, hosted the first rehearsal. And here is what she had to say.

Please especially thank Roberta and the production cast and staff for letting us disrupt their rehearsal and giving us such a wonderful sense of how magical the Red Balloon will be as a play.

I am so thankful to Lee for extending herself to her friends and bringing us new friends to Adventure Theatre. So, here I am, after not having blogged for some time. Well, things have been going so well. Blogging becasue I'm so excited to tell you about this amazing production we are opening next week.

Enjoy an average day in the life of the roundheaded kid, a day filled with wild optimism and utter despair, a little baseball and a touch of romance, and shared with friends by the name of Snoopy, Linus, Lucy, Sally and Schroeder.

Kurt Boehm (Snoopy) was last seen in Goodnight Moon with Adventure Theatre and Tribute Productions (Helen Hayes Nomination—Outstanding Ensemble). He was also Assistant Choreographer for Harold and the Purple Crayon. Signature Theatre: Les Miserables (Helen Hayes Award—Outstanding Ensemble), Kiss of the Spider Woman (Helen Hayes Nomination—Outstanding Ensemble), One Red Flower, and Partial Eclipse. Arena Stage: She Loves Me. Ford's Theatre: Liberty Smith (workshop). Kennedy Center: Phantom Tollbooth. Theatre of the First Amendment: Lift Icarus and Me. Kurt also teaches and choreographs for Centennial High School, Kids in Dramatic Study, and Creative Artists Institute. He earned his Bachelor's of Music from Catholic University.

Emily Levey (Lucy) is so excited to return to Adventure Theatre, having appeared as Hattie/Spotted Dog in Go Dog. Go! Other DC credits include Dante at Synetic Theatre, Berliner Kabarett at The InSeries, Busytown at Imagination Stage, Merrily We Roll Along and The Happy Time at Signature Theatre, and Reefer Madness at Studio Theatre 2nd Stage (2007 Helen Hayes Award winner for Best Resident Musical). She has also appeared on NBC's 'Third Watch" and "ER."

Jobari Parker-Namdar (Schroeder) is a Senior Musical Theatre major at Howard University and DC native. Credits include Metro Stage: The Stephen Schwartz Project; New Horizons Theatre: The Samson Musical; Signature Theatre: The Lost Songs of Broadway Cabaret, Sizzlin’ Summer Cabaret Series, Anyone Can Whistle; Howard University: Company, Working, A Chorus Line.

Andrew Sonntag (Charlie Brown) is very happy to return to Adventure Theatre for the summer! Some recent area credits include Call of the Wild at Olney Theatre Center, The Neverending Story at Imagination Stage, Glory Days at Signature Theatre, The Stephen Schwartz Project at MetroStage, The Secret Garden at Adventure Theatre, and Reefer Madness at The Studio Theatre, for which he received a Helen Hayes Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor. He graduated from the Catholic University of America with a B.A. in Drama, and received additional training from The American Theatre Wing's Springboard NYC program.

Tim Jones (Set Design) is presently the Props Shop Supervisor at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center and Adjunct Professor for Theatre at the University of Maryland. His design and props work has been seen on stage at the Kansas City Rep, African Continuum Theatre, Tribute Production, Round House Theatre, Rep Stage and Everyman Theatre. Before coming to Maryland he was Prop Master and instructor at PlayMakers Repertory Company and Adjunct Professor for Theatre at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He has also worked as Prop Master or artisan at other theatre companies around the country including the Tony Award winning Utah Shakespeare Festival. Tim is a member of the USITT and the Society of Properties Artisan & Masters. He holds a Masters of Fine Art in Scenery and Properties Design from the University of Memphis and a BA in Communication from the Salisbury State College. Tim is a native of Prince Georges County Maryland but has lived and worked throughout the United States.

Kendra Rai (Costume Design) is a Costume Design MFA graduate of Pennsylvania State University, and now works as a regional designer and as a Draper at Washington National Opera. Before moving to the East coast, Kendra worked in Seattle as a freelance costume designer and as Costume Shop Manager and in-house Designer at Taproot Theatre. Her work has been seen on the stages of Taproot Theatre, Seattle Shakespeare Company, Museum of Glass Theatre, Seattle Pacific University, Columbia Basin College, Pennsylvania State University, and CCBC. Kendra loves working at Adventure Theatre (where she has previously done Babe the Sheep Pig, Miss Nelson Is Missing, The Lion, The Which and the Wardrobe), and is excited to return this summer.

Jason Arnold (Lighting Design): While this is his first production with Adventure Theatre, he has lit many children's shows at Imagination Stage including BusyTown, The Neverending Story, The Jungle Book, Junie B. Jones, and Charlotte's Webb. Other design credits include Resurrection (Philadelphia Theatre Company, Hartford Stage), Emergence-See! (Arena Stage), Honey Brown Eyes, Family Secrets, Oh The Innocents, Talley's Folly (Theatre J), Intelligence, A Shayna Maidel, and The Santaland Diaries (Rep Stage). Mr. Arnold teaches at American University.

Andrea “Dre” Moore (Properties Design) has made properties her career for 7 exciting years. +Danny Pushkin (Peter, Mr. Tumnus, Edmond, Mr. Beaver, Aslan) returns to Adventure Theatre, after performing in Clara Barton, Go Dog Go (Red Dog), Stinky Cheese Man (Stinky), and Goodnight Moon (Tooth Fairy) in the '07-'08 season. Danny is also deeply involved in the Washington Christmas Revels this year. Some past favorite roles include Tony in West Side Story, Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, Frank Butler in Annie Get Your Gun, Barnaby in Babes in Toyland, and Dragon in The Near-Sighted Knight and the Far Sighted Dragon.

PRODUCTION TEAM
+Steven Scott Mazzola (Director) After completing an MFA in dramaturgy from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Steven came to Washington to work at the Kennedy Center and then The Shakespeare Theatre Company. He also directed The Stinky Cheese Man and other Fairly Stoopid Tales at Adventure Theatre in 2008. In addition to teaching for Woolly Mammoth Theatre and the National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts, Steven is a master acting teacher, Audience Enrichment Programs Manager and producer of the free weekly concert series Happenings at the Harman at the Shakespeare Theatre Company. He was a faculty member at the University of Maryland University College where he was nominated for an excellence in teaching award in 2002. Steven was named “One of the 100 Washingtonians to Watch” in Washingtonian magazine and serves on the Advisory Committee of the National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts.

+*Ayun Fedorcha (Lighting Designer) She is the Resident Lighting Designer at Gala Hispanic Theatre, where her work on Abel Lopez’s Production of La Chunga was nominated for a Helen Hayes Award. She recently designed Sweeny Todd at Catholic University. She is the recipient of the Mary Goldwater Award from the Theatre Lobby for Jose Carrasquillo’s Metamorphosis for the Washington Shakespeare Company, and Turn of the Screw and Lion in Winter at Round House Theatre. Ayun’s work was seen on the Feline Stage at Wolf Trap for the opera Romeo et Juliette and The Kennedy Center for Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse. Ayun is a member of IATSE-United Scenic Artists, Local 829.

Tobias Harding (Co-Scenic Designer) hails from Germany and has been living in the US since 1996. He holds an MFA in scenic and lighting design from Ohio University. Some of his favorite designs include: Life is a Dream and After Darwin for the Journeymen Theatre Co., Fires in the Mirror at Cincinnati Playhouse and A View from the Bridge at OU’s Kantner Hall.

+Eileen Garcia (Co-Scenic Designer & Properties Master) holds an MFA in Scenic Design (2002) from Purdue University and an MA in History of Decorative Arts (2008) from the Corcoran College of Art/Smithsonian Associates. Eileen has showcased her design and craft work at numerous venues across the metro area and beyond. Currently, she is the new Properties Mistress for the Signature Theatre, and the Santa Fe Opera Prop Shop as their Master Crafts Artisan.

During the run of Adventure Theatre’s much celebrated Production of HAROLD AND THE PURPLE CRAYON, patrons, families and students from all over participated in a wonderful crayon recycling program. Thousands of crayons were brought to various locations around the area and Adventure Theatre to be sent of to CrazyCrayons.com - A crayon recycling program. Some crayons we crayons were kept at Adventure Theatre for a fun arts and craft project on Oct. 27th. Other crayons were taken to The Children’s Inn at NIH for a repeat of the project. The results were fantastic. Fun was had by all.

Below is the recipe for a great project to do at home with your kids.

Most families with kids have an endless supply of crayons. They seem to be everywhere: under sofas and the kitchen table, in boxes and desk drawers, under bathroom cabinets and within tool boxes. Can you name more places to find crayons, broken and whole? Here’s a cool way to recycle all of your broken crayons.

What you’ll need:
· candy molds
· Old sauce pan and clean recycled aluminum can(s)
· Stove (make sure you have an adult with you to use the stove!)
· Lots of broken crayons
· Newspaper
· Popsicle stick.

What to do:
1. Peel all of the paper off of your crayons *NOTE – soaking them for a bit in warm water helps the paper to peel off.
2. Put pieces of crayons into the old sauce pan (you can try mixing colors, or using the same colors all together, it’s up to you), or you can put the crayons in the aluminum can and put the can in a saucepan with water. *NOTE: The aluminum cans never get too hot to touch – but you still want to be careful.
3. Turn the stove on low to melt the wax crayons slowly (ask an adult to help or to do this for you) * NOTE: Be careful – there is a flash point, if it gets too hot.
4. Place the candy molds on a sheet of newspaper and pour the melted crayon wax into them. If you’re using the aluminum cans in the saucepan, make sure the can is not too hot to touch! Have fun mixing colors or layers colors on top of each other or making swirling patterns with a popsicle stick.
5. Let cool.
6. Pop them out and color, color, color!

Harold shows us, or better yet reminds us that the imagination is powerful and should never to be taken for granted. Would we have the internet or cell phones or ipods had it not been for someone’s imagination? The imagination should be stewarded and nursed.” Says Michael J. About the Writer
Adam Robert’s musical theatre adaptation of the beloved children's book Harold and the Purple Crayon was developed and had its first reading in 1997 at Wesleyan University. It had its 2007 Educational Theatre premiere at Seacoast Repertory Theatre in Portsmouth, NH. Adam W. Roberts is a Boston-area screenwriter, playwright, and composer. His debut TV pilot script, "Life Without Green," is slated to be shot in the coming year. He has composed scores for the musical Subway Days (Theatre at Old South), and the plays Molly's Dream (Boston Theatre Works), Marat/Sade (Bridge Theatre Company), I Go Solo, Learn from the Self-Made Man, and A Random Bit of Nonsense About Yul Brynner (Essays on Theatre Company). Music directing credits include Company (Longwood Players), Molly's Dream (Boston Theatre Works), Marat/Sade (Bridge Theatre Company), and Assassins (Manhattan Project Theatre Company). Roberts sings with Boston-area a cappella sensation Honorable Menschen, serves on the board of The Longwood Players, and works for the Huntington Theatre Company.

Adventure Theatre's Community Engagement Program

Adventure Theatre will host a Crayon Recycling Project. Partners include Bethesda Green, GreenKids Program Audubon Naturalist Society, McCormick & Schmick's Seafood Restaurant, BlackFinn Restaurant and Saloon, and Gaffney's Restaurant. Student and patrons are encouraged to bring their old crayons to any of these locations for donations. On Oct. 26th at Adventure Theatre, some of the crayons will be melted down in a fun interactive arts project with/for kids at the Children's Inn at NIH. Volunteers and recyclers that participate in the art project or bring crayons to the theatre will be entered into a raffle to win four free tickets to our next production.

The whole cast are recent graduates from American University, Susquehanna University, Howard University, University of Miami, and Catholic University.

Josh Sticklin (Harold) was last seen as Scarron in Washington Shakespeare Company's Red Noses. His other credits include: Kit Marlow (Young Actor) and Myth-Appropriation: Creation Stories (Actor) at Rorschach Theatre, They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (Robert Syverton) at the Volkov International Theatre Festival in Yaroslavl', Russia, and The Mystery of Edwin Drood (William Cartwright), Into the Woods (The Baker), Godspell (John the Baptist/Judas), The Country Wife (Master Horner), and Our Country's Good (Lieutenant Ralph Clark) at American University. Sticklin is a recent graduate of American University's Political Science and Musical Theatre programs.

Branda Lock (Purple Crayon) is so happy to be debuting at Adventure Theatre for her favorite audience age demographic. Most recently she was seen at the Cumberland Theatre as Emma Carrew in Jekyll&Hyde. Other regional theatre credits include: Oliver (Nancy) at Theatre on the Hill, Seussical the Musical (Gertrude McFuzz) at the Pennsylvania Youth Theatre, and Twelfth Night and Call of the Wild on Tour 59 with Olney Theatre's National Players. Branda is a graduate of Susquehanna University where she earned her BA in Theatre and her BS in Economics.

John Dellaporta (Dragon) has spent most of the last two years appearing in numerous shows at Toby's Dinner Theatre in both Columbia and Baltimore, including the Helen Hayes-nominated Titanic: The Musical. Other favorites: Songs for a New World with Open Circle Theatre and Archibald in The Secret Garden at Catholic University.

Florrie Bagel (Moose) favorite roles are Baby Jane in Jerry Springer: The Opera (Studio Theatre 2ndStage), Miss Pennywise in Urinetown and Mama Morton in Chicago (Montgomery College), Godspell (Olney Theater Center), Florinda in Into the Woods (Signature Theatre) and, most recently, she originated the role of Bethany in the new musical Nobody’s Perfect at The Kennedy Center and was in the World Premiere of the Stephen Schwartz Project (Metro Stage). Upcoming projects include: Peter Pan (Olney Theatre Center).

Ayanna Hardy (Porcupine) originally from Pitman, NJ, is a recent BFA graduate from Howard University where she studied Musical Theatre. She has been recently seen in The Samson Musical at New Horizons Theatre in Alexandria, VA. Her other credits include Working, A Chorus Line, and Into the Woods.

Katie Nigsch (Moose U/S) is a B.F.A. Music Theatre graduate from Shenandoah University, and has been all over doing theatre, but is happy to finally settle in the Washington DC area.

**Michael J. Bobbitt (Director/Choreographer) has directed, choreographed and performed at many theatres in the Washington DC Metropolitan Area, including Arena Stage, The Shakespeare Theatre Company, Signature Theatre, Studio Theatre, Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, Center Stage, Roundhouse Theatre and the Kennedy Center. His National and International credits include the NY Musical Theatre Festival, Mel Tillis 2001, 1996 Olympics, and the Washington Post Music and Dance Scholarships Awards. He studied creative writing and music at Susquehanna University and theatre and dance at The Washington Ballet, The Dance Theatre of Harlem, The American Musical and Dramatic Academy and NY University’s Tisch School of the Arts (Cap 21). Michael has taught theatre and dance at George Washington University, Catholic University, Montgomery College, Howard University, and the Washington Ballet. Recently, Michael directed Petite Rouge, Off-Broadway, at the New York Musical Theatre Festival, Queen of the Bohemian Dream at the Capital Fringe Festival, NOLA for the Source Theatre Festival and conceived, directed and choreographed a new musical revue, The Stephen Schwartz Project, in collaboration with Broadway and Film composer, Stephen Schwartz at MetroStage. His choreography and movement was seen in Measure for Pleasure and Vigils at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, the 24th Annual Helen Hayes Awards, Shlemiel, The First at Theatre J, Spunk at Tribute Productions, Arsenic and Old Lace at CenterStage, and Souvenir at Studio Theatre.

Kurt Boehm (Assistant Choreographer) was previously seen as Bunny in Goodnight Moon. Choreography/teaching credits include: Kids In Dramatic Study (Footloose), Columbia Center for Theatrical arts, and Creative Arts Institute. He has performed at the Kennedy Center, Arena Stage, Signature Theatre, Toby’s, Adventure/Tribute Productions, and Theatre of the First Amendment. This spring he will be choreographing Damn Yankees at Centennial High School.

Julia Cain (Assistant Director) assistant directing credits in Washington include Boom (upcoming) and Measure for Pleasure with Woolly Mammoth Theatre, The Way of the World (upcoming) with The Shakespeare Theatre, and Cymbeline with dog & pony dc. She has also directed at Princeton University and Courthouse Theatre Company and taught at the Charles River Creative Arts Program. She graduated from Princeton University in 2007.

++ Andrew F. Griffin (Lighting Designer) is a Resident Artist for Adventure Theatre where he has also designed Babe the Sheep Pig; The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; Dorothy Meets Alice; and Alexander Who is Not, Not, Not, Not Going to Move. A freelance lighting designer in Washington, DC, Andrew’s designs have been seen at Olney Theatre Center, Woolly Mammoth, Toledo Opera, Michigan Opera Theatre Children’s Chorus, Washington Shakespeare Company, Studio Theatre, Imagination Stage, Rorschach Theatre, Journeymen Theatre, Forum Theatre, The Delaware Shakespeare Festival, and Longacre Lea. Upcoming projects include the lighting design for Host and Guest with Synetic Theatre and returning to Michigan Opera Theatre for their Fall season where he is the resident assistant lighting designer. Colin Grube (Stage Manager) has worked as Stage Manager for Rorschach Theatre (Skin of Our Teeth), Production Manager for Theatre of the First Amendment (Mariela in the Desert), as well as in a variety of positions at Round House Theatre.

Camille Kashaka (Production Assistant) is a graduate of Howard University where she studied Theatre Arts Administration. She has worked since high school and throughout college as an actor, director, stage manager, lighting designer and production manager. Camille has worked on plays such as Parting, A Chorus Line, Oedipus Rex, Working, and Yellowman. Also, she has taught theatre to elementary school age children for the past two years.

* ¥ Elizabeth Jenkins McFadden (Scenic Designer) serves as the resident set designer for Montgomery College-Rockville; she is also resident designer for the Washington Savoyards and serves on their board of directors. She is a 2006 recipient of the Theatre Lobby’s Mary Goldwater award and she is a member of the theatrical designers' union, United Scenic Artists Local 829. Julie Roedersheimer (Props) As a sort of Jack (or is that Jill?) of all trades, Julie has worked all over the DC Metro area as a props designer, carpenter, scenic painter and electrician. She has worked in those many capacities for Firebelly, Washington Shakespeare Company, Summer Opera Theatre Company, The Shakespeare Theatre, Washington Savoyards, Rorschach Theatre, Theatre J, and more.

Darius Smith (Music Director) can most often be seen on campus at Howard University where he serves on faculty as a Professor of Voice for Musical Theater and director of Standing Room Only: The Howard University Musical Theater Ensemble. He also has served as musical director for several area organizations, productions, and readings, including Go, Dog, Go (Adventure Theater), Queen of the Bohemian Dream (Source Theater), City @ Peace (DC), Songs For A New World (Towson, MD), Bingo Long (Kennedy Center), Say It Ain't So (Silver Spring, MD) and The Children's Theater Workshop (DC). An alumnus of NYU's Graduate Musical Theater Writing Program, Darius has written music and lyrics for Samson: The Musical (New Horizons Theater), R/J: The Fatal Tour (commissioned by the Lincoln Theater), Amorous Ruminations: a song cycle and Breaks (book and lyrics by Jermaine Hardy). His music was used both in NYC (Aaron Davis Hall) and DC (Kennedy Center) with a 2007 Kennedy Center commission for choreographer, Princess Mhoon-Cooper – Dangerous Liasons. He is currently writing book, music and lyrics for a new musical entitled, U.G.L.Y., that is scheduled to workshop this Fall and premiere in January 2009 at Howard University as part of their current season.

++Katie Touart (Costumes Designer) is an artist whose costuming career began with seventy-five kimonos made from dyed and painted bed sheets for an elementary school production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Mikado, one of seven shows she costumed for her local school. Since 2002, she has designed and created work for established Washington children’s theaters. Recent credits include: The Secret Garden, Clara Barton: The Courage Within,Winnie the Pooh, and Ferdinand the Bull (Adventure Theatre) Black Diamond, HowOld is a Hero? andGoing the Distance (Smithsonian’s Discovery Theater) The Grid and Below the Horizon (Imagination Stage). Since 2006, Katie has worked for the Kennedy Center’s Musicals In The Schools program, first as costume assistant and now lead costume designer, helping to costume DC school children for productions of Mulan,Aladdin and Alice In Wonderland. She previously worked as a commercial artist and designer and holds degrees from the University of Chicago and Massachusetts College of Art.

Deborah Wheatley (Projection Designer) is a 3rd year Scenic and Costume Design MFA candidate at the University of Maryland (UMD). Recent & upcoming productions include: To Be Young, Gifted and Black at UMD (scenic design); Alice in Wonderland, Jr. for the Kennedy Center’s Musicals in the Schools (scenic design); Blue’s Journey National Tour (associate scenic designer) & Chasing George Washington (projections designer) at the Kennedy Center’s Theatre for Young Audience); Macbeth at Folger Shakespeare (assistant scenic designer); The Neverending Story at Imagination Stage (projections designer); The Rocky Horror Show at The University of South Florida (headdress design); and Fever Dream at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Co. ADVENTURE THEATRE ANNOUNCES SPECIAL SUMMER FAMILY WEEKEND EVENTS!

Adventure Theatre, the longest running children’s theatre in the region and one of the main attractions in Historic Glen Echo Park since 1971, will continue its run of BABE, THE SHEEP PIG (made into a popular Oscar Winning Film in 1995) while introducing several unique events to celebrate the joy of family.

June 28th - THEN AND WOW FESTIVAL 2008 at Glen Echo Park.
Adventure Theatre will present a free reading of this world premiere play - AIN'T NO BACK TO A MERRY-GO-ROUND: DESEGREGATING GLEN ECHO PARK at 3:30 pm. Reading includes post-reading discussion with US Park Ranger Sam Swersky. The reading is a co-production of Adventure Theatre, the Glen Echo Partnership for Arts and Culture, and the Smithsonian’s Discovery Theater. Funding for the reading is provided by the Historic Preservation Grant Fund of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington.

July 12th and 13th – GRANDPARENT’S WEEKEND.
Adventure Theatre welcomes grandparents and their grandchildren to enjoy a performance of BABE, THE SHEEP PIG and receive a special BABE coloring sheet. Sat/Sun 11:00 am and 1:30 pm. Tickets $12.

July 18th, 19th and 20th - CELEBRATE ADOPTION WEEKEND.
Adoptive families are invited to celebrate with orphan pig, Babe as he finds love with a new family. Families are also encouraged to enjoy the Carousel as well as the picnic area before or after the show. Participating organizations are The Adoption Center of Washington, The Barker Foundation and Friends of Russian and Ukranian Adoptions. Adventure Theatre will provide cookies and juice. Friday 7:00 pm, Sat/Sun 11:00 am and 1:30 pm. Tickets $12.

July 26th – SQUEELS ON WHEELS PETTING ZOO.
SQUEELS ON WHEELS petting zoo comes to Adventure Theatre from 12 noon to 2:30 pm Children will have an opportunity to pet goats, sheep, ducks, ponies, donkeys, pigs, bunnies, chickens and hens. Hand washing stations will be set up for the kids. Tickets $5 (sold separately.).

Mary Hall Surface (Director) has had twelve productions for families at the Kennedy Center, which next season will feature a new work she has written with composer Susan Kander for the National Symphony Orchestra. A specialist in family theatre, her work has been presented in Germany, Canada, Japan, Peru, France, Taiwan, Sweden, England and Ireland. She has been nominated for four Helen Hays Awards for Outstanding Direction, receiving the award in 2002 for Theatre of the First Amendment's Perseus Bayou. Also a producer, she was the director of New Visions 2000: One Theatre World, a national festival of theatre for young people and families, co-produced by Kennedy Center and ASSITE/USA. Her recent projects Perfume River, a swamp water love story written with compose David Maddox and Grammy-winner Jon Carroll; Who's in the Hopper, commissioned by the National Gallery of Art for their Edward Hopper retrospective and her adaptation/direction of The Second Shepherds' Play for the Folger Consort. She is a National Endowment for the Arts on-site evaluator and 2003 panelist and the 2006 recipient of a life-time achievement award for her playwriting from the American Alliance for Theatre and Education. She was honored to direct Coming Home, the opening production of the Atlas Center for the Performing Arts.

KURT BOEHM (Bunny) This show marks his debut at Adventure Theatre. He is thrilled to be back in the company of Mary Hall Surface and Michael Bobbitt. Previous credits with this "dream team" include; Lift: Icarus and Me (Icarus) at Theatre of the First Amendment under the direction of Mary Hall Surface as well as many Catholic University productions with Michael Bobbitt. DC credits include: The Phantom Tollbooth (Milo) at The Kennedy Center, She Loves Me at Arena Stage, Kiss of The Spider Woman (Gabriel/Prisoner) and One Red Flower (Alan) at Signature Theatre. He also has performed at Toby's in numerous productions including: Aida, Mame (Older Patrick), Thoroughly Modern Millie (Jimmy US), Cats (Asparagus), and Footloose (Ren). His portrayal of Ren was recognized by Broadwayworld.com as part of the Best of Baltimore 2006 for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Musical. JUDY SIMMONS (Old Lady) Upcoming shows include Judy’s newest solo cabaret, Get A Gripe at Signature Theatre’s Sizzling Summer Cabaret series in July, Psycho Cabaret at The DC Fringe Festival, and Sweeney Todd with Ganymede Arts Theatre opening in September. She recently performed her critically acclaimed solo cabaret, Sondheim Tonight!, at several venues, including Signature Theatre, Everyman Theatre, Prince Theatre, Theater Alliance and The Arts Club. Judy also was in Naked Cabaret: Emotionally, That Is! at the D.C. Fringe Festival and appeared as Hannah in Spitfire Grill at Theater Alliance. Other favorite shows: Sweeney Todd, Assassins, Company, A Stephen Sondheim Evening, and Follies at Signature Theatre and A New Brain and Falsettoland at The Studio Theatre and The Doctor’s Dilemma, The School For Scandal and Mourning Becomes Electra at The Shakespeare Theatre. She teaches at The Theatre Lab and has taught at American and Catholic Universities and directs cabaret shows. Judy is the Executive Director of The D.C. Cabaret Network.

JENNIFER TIMBERLAKE (Dancing Bear) is delighted to return to The Atlas Performing Arts Center (“Coming Home”) and Adventure Theatre (“Cinderella”). Most recently she was seen as Miriam in “Summer of ‘42” at Round House Theatre and as Soap Star in “Menopause:The Musical” in Baltimore. Regional credits include the title role in “Always…Patsy Cline” (Dakota Theatre) and Carrie in “Carousel” (Shaker Mountain Performing Arts Festival, N.Y.). Alex Perez - Featured Artist of the Month

Some of you may remember Alex from this past season's shows, including Stuart Little and Go Dog, Go! Alex is quickley becoming an audience favorite. In fact, as I run into my little boy's classmates, they ask about the MC Dog. Alex has a great knack for entertaining kids as well as other actors in the dressing rooms. He's been a wonderful Resident Artist member - spreading the word about Adventure Theatre and volunteering for outreach programs. We look forward to seeing Alex in Babe, The Sheep Pig this summer. Don't miss his wigged, high-heeled antics in The Stinky Cheese Man.

Why I love Adventure Theater? This Theater really appreciates it actors and other artists involved. They have a wonderful staff who lookout for us, a great facility for us to play and be creative in telling some of my favorite childhood stories. And I just love the Location of the Theater, Historic Glen Echo Park. Working there is a great way to escape from life’s crazy-ness and enjoy the wonderful Landscape. But the most satisfaction is how great the Children are. To play onstage, look out to the audience and see the kids watch with amazement is soooo cool. It’s too cute.

It's fitting that Adventure Theatre in Glen Echo Park should host the one-act play "Clara Barton: The Courage Within." After all, Glen Echo was Barton's home for the final 15 years of her life. Her house, now a National Historic Site, is just a five-minute walk from the theater.
Barton, who started the American Red Cross, spent her long life in service to others.
The youngest of five children, she was born in Massachusetts in 1821. Her interest in nursing began around age 11 when one of her brothers had a bad accident. She spent two years caring for him. Her work during the Civil War, in which she investigated the fate of thousands of soldiers and earned the nickname "The Angel of the Battlefield," led to the creation of the American Red Cross in 1881.

Review of The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fair(l)y (Stoopid) Tales at Adventure Theatre

Run oh run as fast as you can
To Adventure Theatre
To See the Stinky Cheese Man!

Our Kids (OK) recommends Adventure Theatre’s performance of The Stinky Cheese Man. OK thinks Adventure Theatre’s January/February performance of Go Dog Go is untouchable and a cut above The Stinky Cheese Man, but The Cheese Man surely has its own unique, hilarious, and action-packed moments.

The Stinky Cheese Man is an excellent adaptation from the book The Stinky Cheese Man and other Fairly Stupid Tales. And in this unusual case, OK recommends reading the book to your children prior to the performance. If not, according to our OK kindergarten reviewer, the show will be “kinda confusing” at times. The theatre’s website also contains an Adventure Guide link, which recommends things to ponder before, during and after the performance.

For parents who are not familiar with Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith’s book, it is a Caldecott Honor Book and contains stories they call “almost Fairy Tales. But not quite....Fairly Stupid Tales.” Some of the titles include “The Princess and the Bowling Ball”, “Little Red Running Shorts” and “The Tortoise and the Hair,” and rest assured, every single one is silly and quirky. And ditto on the silliness and quirkiness of the actual performance! In many respects the show is even quirkier, if that is possible, because as Adventure’s website states and proves to be true, the fairy tales “go berserk right on stage.” OK does not want to spill the beans entirely, but finding the fairy tale characters in each other’s stories is “stoopidly” clever.

Early in the production, the cast’s attention-grabbing song and dance number “Time Upon a Once” hints at how genuinely berserk this adaptation is. As previously stated, all of the fair(l)y tales covered in this performance are silly and quirky, but Cinderumpelstiltskin and The Stinky Cheese Man are clear crowd favorites. Alex Perez, the Go Dog Go narrator, continues to impress even in high heels this time as Cinderella’s ugly stepmother.

There is some fun audience participation in The Other Frog Prince where one child is asked to join the cast onstage in a song and dance number. The Really Ugly Duckling has its moments, but is likely the least engaging for most.

The role of the Stinky Cheese Man could not have been more perfectly cast with Daniel Pushkin. Pushkin’s performance made his character believable and likeable despite being so darn stinky. His entire performance is memorable, but his solo “It’s No Picnic Being Cheese” is stinkin’ stellar! He takes his mother’s comments about his being set free and literally and figuratively runs with it! He sings, “Run run run as fast as you can. You can’t catch me. I’m the Stinky Cheese Man.” Keep your eyes open for the unusual ending.

The performance started only a few minutes late, and the run time was just under one hour. The facility is a welcome change over of its previous temporary location. The new theatre is spacious with comfortable cushioned audience seating, convenient restrooms and a birthday party room. OK observed an unusually high number of children sitting on floor cushions this time. We are not sure if this is a case of the theatre overselling or maybe the birthday party groups choosing to sit there.

If you have little ones, OK recommends using your stroller as there is a bit of a walk from the parking lot to the theatre. The only downside is required outside stroller parking, which happened to be an inconvenience on an unusually windy day.

The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fair(l)y (Stoopid) Tales runs from March 8 to April 20, 2008 on Saturdays and Sundays at 11am and 1:30pm.

Adventure Theatre recommends this show for ages three and up. OK agrees with this suggestion, but with one caveat. Remember your three year-olds and even your six year-olds will certainly have their eyes glued to the action and giggle throughout, but may be confused at times about the unconventional mixing of fair(l)y tales.

Ballroom Cafe opens this weekend

So, you can make a whole day out of seeing a show. This weekend the Ballroom Cafe opens, right across the park's midway. See a show and then have pizza, popcorn, hotdogs and all sorts of things including Gelato. Very very soon, the Carousel will open, but in the meantime - enjoy the playground as Spring slowly comes in.

I am so thrilled to announce that Andrew has been rewarded with a nomination for Best Lead Actor in a Musical. He's truly a special talent - with unbelievable mad skills (juggling, firebreathing, etc.). YEAH ANDREW!

Another Resident Artist - Matthew Neilson - recieved 2 nominations for Sound. Matt has worked on May AT shows - most recently - Secret Garden.

Additionally, our wonderful costume designer for Go Dog Go - Reggie Ray was nominated for Best Costume design as well. Our orchestrator for Go Dog Go - Chris Youstra was nominated for Best Musical Direction. AT is thrilled to be working with these Artists and are really proud of their accomplishments. Stinky Cheese Man First Rehearsal

Minutes after the rehearsal started our wonderful music Director (Wayne Chadwick) had the ast singing these funny funny songs. The show is funny - fractured fairy tales (Think Shrek) - with a hilarious cast. It's about a man who is cheese and he stinks - hysterical. Catch this one, get your tickets now!!!

Kindergarten reading curriculum and a Caldecott Honor. Little Red Hen, Foxy Loxy and Alex Perez as the Cinderella's Stepmother. I hear that this is his dream role!!! The show is being directed by the tallest director in the world (and he's wonderful, too), Steven Mazzola. Saw Michael Kahn from the Shakepeare Theatre yesterday (a friend of Steven's and mine) and he seems anxious for the Opening to get here.

So, I'm blogging because one of my favorite new actresses and resident artists fussed at me about my lack of blogging lately. Sorry guys, it's really been a little crazy - this onth has been filled ith legislative meetings, advocay meetings, networking, fundraising, planning next season, snow days and continuin to step up our ame at Adventure. Luckily, it's all paying off. The great PR, outreach, diverse programming and a staff that working soooo hard is really bringing a lot of attention to the organization. I'm thrilled.

Excitedly, Go Dog Go is still a huge hit and SOLD OUT!!! we're talking with the New Bethesda Theatre about an short extended, encore-back by popular demand run at the end of June!!! More on that later. Funny, I've seen postings on listserv of people trying to buy tickets from each other to the show. How fun for us!

I'll keep you all posted - we'll be announcing our new season very very soon!

Hey All,

Sorry that I haven't posted much. I'm just finding out that January/February is a very busy time in the theatre world. There have been Arts Advocay Meetings, Networking meetings, and lots of next season planning sessions.

The theatre is thriving. Go Dog Go is practically sold out. (less than 50 tickets to sell for the rest of the run.) We are finally going to online ticketing really soon. Plans are in the works for Stinky Cheese Man. Tomorrow, we will present 3 showings of the Smithsonian's Black History Show - How Old Is A Hero? - which celebrates the contributions of children in the civil rights movement. We're all working hard. Please, don't be afraid to email me with any thoughts about the theatre.

A DOG ADOPTION DAY...and cats, too!
The Montgomery County Humane Society is bringing adoptable animals to Adventure Theatre in Glen Echo Park in their Mobile Adoption Unit (MAU). Staff, volunteers and foster parents will be available to help you with any questions you may have about the animals. Come and visit with the animals, find out how to help the Humane Society, learn about their Outreach Programs, donate items and cash, or become a foster parent to a deserving animal.

Petco has donated, to each adopting family - $350 worth of Coupons and a goodie bag with treats and toys. Additionally, Petco will give adoptive parents access to the “Love My Pet Low Cost Vaccination Clinic” (run by License Vets and Vet Tech) which includes all shots, tests, microchipping (for locating lost dogs), and some preventative meds – adding up to Hundred’s of Dollars in savings. Many thanks to Jennifer Coleman, manager of Petco in Rockville, MD. Quince Orchard Veterinary Hospital will honor the Spay/Neutering Certificate that each family will receive. The event will further be enhanced with the volunteer help of Girl Scout Troupe #5464, The “Donation Station” a group of 7th grade student volunteers, several volunteers from the Montgomery County Volunteer Center and Adventure Theatre Resident Actor, Lisa Carrier, who has rescued and raised funds for countless Animals across the country.

DOGS. Snow. Opening!

Yeah, we're opened. We had a bit of a scare due to snow. Adventure Theatre is managed by 2 seperate entities - GEPPAC - The County's Management and The National Park Service. When they say the park is closed because of snow, the park is closed. So, we lost a full day of tech. Luckily, I have a team of people who will go above and beyond the call to make it happen. IT was all hands on deck and the show opened beautifully. You MUST see this adorable show.

I poked my head in the room last night to see how rehearsals are going. I've never seen a group of artists together having so much fun. Get your tickets. The show is selling fast.
